International Day of the Girl Child

United Nations declared October  11 as International Day of the Girl Child(IDGC).The International Day of the Girl Child promotes girls’ rights and highlights gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys.In December 2011, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had adopted Canada backed Resolution to declare 11th October as the IDGC. It was first observed in 2012 with theme ‘Ending child marriage’. The theme of IDGC in 2013 and 2014 was ‘Innovating for girl’s education’ and ‘Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence’.

2015 theme: ‘The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030’. This year’s theme focuses on adolescent girls and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be achieved by 2030. SDG has set 17 international targets including on gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
