The Union Government has formed a comprehensive project to increase the storage capacity
of warehouse in Kerala State during the 12th Five Year Plan as part of the food security policy
of the UPA Government. Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs K.V. Thomas said
the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) would
set up warehouses with a storage capacity of 14.5 lakh tonnes of food grain at a cost of Rs.
1,224.9 crore within five years

India has invited the Italian industry to be a partner in the proposed National Manufacturing
and Investment Zones (NMIZ). Commerce, Industry and Textiles Minister, Mr. Anand

Working Group (JWG) should prepare their recommendation for the India-Italy Joint
Economic Commission (JEC) meeting in June.

Government approves 5% stake sale in ONGC, may fetch Rs 12,000 crore

A group of ministers on Tuesday approved the sale of 5% equity in state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) through the auction method to institutional investors, a move which is expected to help raise more than Rs 12,000 crore for the cash-strapped government.The government in the Budget for 2011-12 had envisaged to raiseRs40,000 crore through PSU disinvestment, but in about 11 months it could mop up only Rs1,145 crore from stake sale in the Power Finance Corporation (PFC).

 The Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system being developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation which would be under total control of Indian government. India committed to forging deeper relations with Japan


India is committed to forging deeper relations with Japan as part of its ‘Look East’ policy, which aims at closer integration with the East Asian region, the Minister of State for Planning, Science & Technology and Earth Science, Mr. Ashwani Kumar said during a meeting with a high level Japanese delegation at New Delhi.

Airlines allowed to directly import ATF


The Director General of Foreign Trade allowed individual domestic airlines to directly import aviation turbine fuel (ATF) by issuing a formal notification to this effect.

New MNREGA version aims to boost productivity


An operational guideline suggested for a radically improved version for MNREGA (Mahathma Gandhi Natonal Rural Employment Guarantee Act) call for “urgent measures” to convert the rural job scheme into a productivity-enhancing instrument, particularly in the agriculture sector. The Rural Development Minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh who unveiled the new guideline prepared by a committee headed by the Planning Commission Member, Mr. Mihir Shah. The revised guideline for MNREGA 2.0 suggests the strengthening of the synergy between the job scheme and rural livelihoods especially agriculture and allied sectors, and respond to demands of the States for greater location flexibility in permissible works.

Bring excise, service tax back to pre-crisis level: PM’s advisory panel

The prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC) has advocated increasing excise duty and service tax to the pre-crisis level, even as it pitched for tougher action on subsidies. Expressing concern over the high fiscal deficit, which is expected to overshoot the target of 4.6 % of GDP this fiscal. Releasing the review of the economy for 2011-12, Dr. C. Rangarajan, Chairman, PMEAC, said: “The rate hike need not necessarily be done in one go, it could be done in phases”.

19 % import duty likely on power equipment for mega projects

Power generation equipment for projects above 1000 MW may attract import duty at the rate of 19%. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is expected to take a call on the issue in next two weeks. If the proposal is approved, it will give domestic equipment manufacturers such as BHEL, L&T and Bharat Forge a major boost. At present, power generation equipment for projects below 1000 MW bears a duty of 5% while there is almost nil duty for equipments for projects above 1000 MW.

EPFO may fix minimum pension at Rs. 1000 per month

Retirement fund body EPFO (Employees’ Provident Fund of India) may take a final decision on fixing the minimum pension for its subscribers at Rs. 1000 per month, at a meeting of the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) scheduled on Feb. 22.

Golden Jubilee convocation of the IARI

The annual farm growth rate was expected to be 3.5 % in the 12th plan period ending this year. Prime Minister who was awarded a honorary doctorate by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute(IARI) said 3.5 % per annum growth rate is commendable. But we must improve upon it to reach 4 % or even higher in the 12th plan. For this our Government is committed to raising Research and Development spending as a whole to at least 2% of the GDP by the end of the 12th plan from the current level of about 1%.

Financial Inclusion

Under the financial inclusion programme, PSBs are required to extend banking facilities to all habitations with a population of 2000 persons by end-March 2012. In all, about 73000 villages had been identified for coverage under this programme.

Capital support assured for public sector banks

The finance Minister MR. Pranab Mukherjee said that the Government is ready to infuse more capital in public sector banks (PSBs) to help them employ with the Basel III capital regulations, while envisage more stringent norms for capital adequacy. The Basel III capital regulations are to be implemented from January 1, 2013 and will be fully phased in by January 1, 2019.

Salaried Employees earning up to Rs 5 lakh a year will not be required to file income tax returns from this year, the finance ministry has said.

Coach factory at Palakkad

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of a new rail coach manufacturing unit at Palakkad in Kerala to manufacture 400 coaches annually at an estimated cost of Rs. 550 crore.

Pakistan may be allowed to invest in India


The Commerce Ministry has proposed to the Finance ministry to exempt Pakistan from the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations. Once the go-ahead comes, foreign direct investment from Pakistan will be possible through the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

Delhi airport is global No 2 in number of passengers handled

The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has moved to the second spot in the global ranking of airports handling 25-40 million passengers annually. Incheon airport in Seoul, South Korea continues to hold the number one position. This was revealed in the 2011 survey done by the Airport Council International (ACI). ACI has 580 members operating 1650 airports in 179 countries.



Rate rise cycle at its peak: RBI
RBI Deputy Governor Dr Subir Gokarn said, inflation falling to a 26 month low of 6.55 % is in line with its expectations and strengthens the belief that the policy rate cycle is at its peak.


India has moved the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body against Turkey over the latter’s safeguard measures on cotton yarn imports.

Moody’s cuts ratings of six European countries


Britain, Austria and France could lose their AAA ratings, as rating agency Moody’s placed the countries on negative watch, while lowering the ratings of six other Euro Zone nations. Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia all had their ratings cut by one notch, with a negative outlook, while that of Spain was cut by two notches to A3, with a negative outlook.



Dollar sales by RBI touch new high in December

The Reserve Bank of India sold $7.8 billion in the spot market in December 2011 to prop up the sliding rupee. Data from the RBI’s February bulletin show that this is the highest amount it has sold in three years.

SBI sets sights on absorbing State Bank of Mysore

After taking over two associated banks- State Bank of Saurashtra in2008 and State Bank of Indore in 2010, SBI has set its sights on assimilating the nearly century old State Bank of Mysore this year.

Air India loses sole right to fly overseas

Air India will effectively cease to be India’s ‘national carrier’, with the Government decision to do away with the state-owned airline’s right to fly abroad. This means private airlines such as Jet, Indigo, Kingfisher and SpiceJet will now face no problem in getting permission to fly abroad.

China’s largest mobile solutions and ad networks company Madhouse has entered the Indian market with the WPP group as strategic partner and investor in the company.
